Apparel worker lynched on theft allegation

Apparel factory worker Delwar Hossain Sayeed, 25 was beaten to death by owners’ goons on Thursday alleging that the victim had stolen fabrics from the factory at Hazipara on DIT Road on Thursday.

In protest, fellow workers blocked the DIT Road for three hours when the police tried to disperse the protesters at least 20 workers and two police officers were injured in the ensuing clashes.

Police said that victim Delwar, a cutting assistant of Easy Fashion Ltd, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Tejgaon division deputy commissioner Anisur Rahman told New Age that the beating by the factory owner’s men left Delwar critically injured.

‘After the police rushed Delwar to DMCH doctors declared him dead,’ said the DMP DC.

Protesting the killing of fellow worker, several hundred garment workers blocked the DIT Road and demanded punishment of the perpetrators.

Witnesses said that at least 20 protesters were injured when the police charged button and open blank fires to disperse the protesters.

Hatirjheel police assistant commissioner Salman Hasan and officer-in-charge Abdur Rashid were injured hit by brick chips pelted by the protesters in response to the police action.

Rampura traffic police assistant commissioner Humayun Kabir said that the protests halted traffic movement on the DIT Road for three hours since 5:30PM.

Hatirjheel police station’s sub-inspector Anath Mitra said that three staff the apparel factory including a security guard had been taken to custody for interrogation over the murder of Delwar.

No factory management officials were available on phone for comments.
